Nancy Deichmiller Anderson

After moving to San Diego’s North Coastal area, I enrolled in the in the Graphic Arts and Print Technology program at Palomar College. After earning my degree, I took a position at the Oceanside Unified School District where I headed the printing department that produced all of the district’s print material.
At OUSD, I met my future husband Larry, who was the district’s Public Information Officer. We married in 1976 and bought a home in Leucadia, where we often walked to the beach during the 22 years we lived there. For our honeymoon we took a fabulous two-week Princess cruise through the Western Caribbean and the Panama Canal. The summer after our wedding, we took a month-long trip across country, pulling a small tent trailer and stopping whenever and wherever we felt. We explored the Northwest as far as Yellowstone and into Vancouver Canada and dropping through Glacier National park into the Midwest. where we visited aunts, uncles and cousins on their working farms.
This started a life-long love of camping and we have progressed from the tent trailer to a travel trailer to the comfort of a 33’ motorhome, which I drive half the time in all kinds of conditions. Sometimes people are startled when we pull into a truck stop and they see me as the lady driver.
Our daughter was born in 1978, launching a whole new chapter in my life. I devoted the next several years to motherhood, thoroughly enjoying it.
During this time we took up square dancing, an energetic, positive activity that we enjoy to this day. Over the 22+ years that we have been dancers, we have gone to multiple National and State Conventions and regional weekend festivals, often taking our motorhome, and we have served in a number of volunteer positions with our club, just completing nearly four years as presidents.
The next phase of my career started while I was serving as a Deacon at my church. My regular visits to Russell Allen, a young man who had been disabled in an industrial accident, led to the family hiring me to be part of his full-time care-giving staff in 1989. I cared for Russell over the next 18 years, often taking him to activities such as Padres games, the Del Mar Fair, beach outings and movies. We became like family with his family and have remained close friends after he passed away.
I have continued as a care giver, and have had several wonderful clients over the years. Today I am still providing in-home assistance several days a week.
When our daughter graduated from high school and went out on her own, my husband and I downsized and moved to Rancho Bernardo. Our daughter and her husband moved back from Colorado and were living with us while they looked for a home when our granddaughter was born in our home in 1999. Two years later our grandson was born and our two grandchildren have been the joy of my life ever since. We have been blessed that our daughter and husband bought a home in Poway, which is not far from us, and we have been very much a part of their lives.
We had horses when we were first married, and our daughter was fortunate to pursue her love of horses as a career and is a successful Hunter/Jumper Trainer in Del Mar. We have been fortunate over the years to be deeply involved and watch our grandchildren ride in multiple shows as we have watched our daughter build her business.
In 2007, we traveled to New York and stayed in a hotel on Times Square and were able to stand virtually underneath the ball to watch the fabled New Year’s Eve ball drop.
A highlight was a couple of years ago when we loaded our two grandchildren into our motorhome and took off on a month-long summer trip to New York, which included several days in Manhattan taking in the sights and two Broadway plays, and time in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Mt. Rushmore, St. Louis, the farm in Illinois and the Grand Canyon. What a wonderful time together – especially treasured now that they are in high school and involved in sports and activities.
Four years ago, we again downsized and moved to Vista, where we hope to eventually retire and go for extended trips in our motorhome. In the meantime I continue to work as a caregiver and my husband is happily pursuing a “second career” as a Realtor with Coldwell Banker.
