Craig Sayre
EDUCATION: After graduation, I went to college at Loyola University of Los Angeles (now Loyola Marymount) for four years. I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Physics in June, 1969. In the fall, I started graduate work at the University of Southern California (USC). I attended graduate school until August, 1970, at which point I won a lottery and was drafted into the US Army for two years. I returned to USC in the fall of 1972 and received a Master's Degree in Physics in February, 1973. I also earned an MBA from San Diego State University in May, 1984.
PROFESSIONAL: After being drafted into the Army, I attended basic training at Ft. Ord. I received advanced training at Ft. Dix, NJ, and Ft. Hamilton in Brooklyn, NY. I was stationed in Stuttgart, West Germany for the remainder of my time in the Army. After graduating from USC, I moved from Northridge to San Diego and went to work for the Naval Electronics Laboratory Center (NELC). For the next ten years. I worked in a laboratory with a research team to measure low background, low temperature infrared detectors for the Army, Air Force, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and NASA. In 1984, and for the next fifteen years, I worked with a research & development team on DARPA's Submarine Laser Communications (SLC) system to develop a satellite that could send messages via a blue/green laser to submarines traveling at speed and at depth. In 1998, I became the Division Head of the Electromagnetics and Advanced Technology Division at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego. This Division conducted research and development in such areas as Naval communications, shipboard antennas, advanced acoustics, solid state physics and communication lasers. I retired from Federal service in June, 2003.
PERSONAL: I met my future wife, Laurie, while I was at Loyola and she was attending UCLA. We were married in Los Angeles in April, 1973. We had two boys, Sean and Scott. We first lived in Poway, CA when I started work for the Navy, and have lived in El Cajon, CA since 1977. We lost Scott in an automobile accident in 1995. Sean married his sweetheart, Maria, in March, 2004. Sean is currently a Detective with the El Cajon Police Department. They have three children, Kyli (10), Shayne (9) and Toby (8).
