Christine Hoffman Segerhammar

After high school, I was accepted to be part of the "Pioneer Class" at the opening of UC Santa Cruz, 1965-1966. 1966-67 turned out to be an interesting period for me, in more ways than one. I ended up coming back to the Valley, attending Valley State College and Pierce, and getting married to a sweetheart, Kemp Segerhammar, whom I had met in 1962 at a church youth retreat. That first year, he was a 6th grade teacher, I was going to UCLA, and we lived off the Santa Monica Freeway at the Robertson exit. He decided to pursue a possibility, and we moved up to Berkeley so he could attend the Lutheran Seminary up there, and I kept up the UC tradition at Berserkley (And it was berserk during those days of Peace marches, protest and People's Park, 1968-70!).
We moved to Denver, Colorado in 1971: Kemp to a Lutheran parish, me to an elementary teaching job (always my intended vocation!) and ended up with two beautiful children, Brita, 1972, and Jacob, 1976. Moved to Stockholm, Sweden for a year and a half (1979-80) where Kemp was pastor at an English-speaking congregation and our kids played in Swedish. I picked lingonberries, and we all got a kick out of being in another culture. Came back to the States, and moved to Glendale, California; Kemp pastoring, and I being mother and substitute teacher, etc. etc. etc. We enjoyed being closer to both sets of our parents in Southern California. Moved up to Palo Alto, CA in 1988, loved it, still substituting full time; kids off to college in 1994, tried living in Seattle for five years (beautiful but not sunny enough) (2003-2008), and moved back to our "homeland", Northern California, ensconced for the past six years in a condo in Belmont, CA, with a view of the Bay and San Francisco on a clear day. Husband retired in 2013. I'm still subbing and, luckily, enjoying it after all these years! I will probably slow down one of these days.
I have always enjoyed: reading good books, gardening (now in pots on our balcony), good movies, golfing, progressive political activism (Pat Francisco got me started), art (been taking classes for the last 20 years, and still a beginner), yoga, (added tai chi last year), road trips (many more planned up to Seattle where son, wife, and first grandson, now almost 6 months live), being outdoors, and being with fun friends and family.
