Cheryl Karlin Novak

I have so many fond and fun memories of my three years at Cleveland. I am still in touch with Marci Huse (she and I are coming together to the 50th) and Linda Yandell. The only thing I didn’t like about high school was having to go to the classes. I wasn’t a great student, but had a great time (which is probably why I wasn’t a very good student). I spent a lot of time in class talking when I should have been listening, but I had a lot to say that absolutely couldn’t wait until the class was over!
After high school I went to Pierce for a little over a year and had fun there too. Once again, the only thing I didn’t like about Pierce was having to go to the classes.
After dropping out of Pierce, I began a career as a legal secretary, which I did for over 30 years before trying my hand as an executive assistant.
I met David Novak in 1967 and in 1968 David and I were married. I worked while he earned his BS from Cal State Northridge. After he graduated, we bought a small home in Van Nuys and in 1976 our daughter, Heather, was born. By 1978, we had moved to a new home in Agoura Hills, and in 1980 we became parents to Seth. In 1986 we moved to a new home in Oak Park, California, where my kids graduated from high school.
Heather has been married for 11 years to Ryan and our granddaughter, Shayna, is 9 years old and is the light of our lives. They live in Encino, and we live in Camarillo so we get to see them often.
Seth has been married for 4 years, and he and Michelle live in Florida. We speak with Seth a few times a week and miss him terribly.
We are very close with both of our children and feel very lucky that our kids still like us. I must say while raising them, I don’t think they liked me all that much due to the fact that they thought they knew way more than I did. And now today Heather complains that at times she sounds just like I did when she was growing up and that drives her crazy! Well, like I tell her, “what comes around, goes around”.
David taught a class at the Anderson School of Business at UCLA for over 16 years and last year retired . He has owned his own business for 35 years and continues to work. I tried retirement for 6 months a few years ago, and found I missed working and being with people. I’m still pretty social, and I am as hyper now as I was in high school so I needed to get back in the work force. I was fortunate to be offered a position at Amgen, which is only a few miles from our home. I enjoy the people I work with and at my age, I was lucky to be offered a good job, especially so close to home. Of course, I am old enough to be everyone’s mother, but they include me in everything anyway.
David and I have had our ups and downs during the past 48 years, but we are still together which makes us among the luckiest people on the planet. And we not only love each other, but we still like each other! Yay.
So that’s about it. See you in October.
